Playing video games has become increasingly popular with today’s population, especially with youth.
New Opportunities Problem Gambling Counselor Dorinda Wehde says that sometimes that can become an issue though, as gaming companies have made certain aspects of their games in hopes of keeping people playing. She mentions that things like loot boxes and prize systems can affect the brain in the same way as gambling, and cause individuals to become addicted.
Wehde explains that one way to try and keep from forming a gaming addiction is to just play games responsibly. A few ways to do that is to interrupt the time spent gaming by doing other activities, like going outside, spending some time with friends or reading a book. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio a few other ways to keep gaming from becoming more than a hobby.
“You would want to maybe even set a timer so that you know that you can’t play anymore. For Parents, they could maybe do a parental block so that the children aren’t able to purchase anything in the game.”
Wehde mentions that if you think you or someone you know does have a problem with gaming or gambling, contacting her or visiting the link in this story online can help get everything started to get back on the right track.
