The Dallas Center-Grimes girls soccer team returns to glory as state champions on Saturday.

The 2-seeded Mustangs took down the 1-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock Go Hawks by a score of 2 to 0, and becomes back-to-back state champions after winning it all last year. Junior Ella Forsyth got the action started for Dallas Center-Grimes when she scored 21 minutes into the match and then sophomore Alex Hofbauer followed it up and put the nail into the coffin of any chance at comeback  for the Go Hawks with a goal at the 56 minute mark. Head Coach Dan James talks about what this championship means to the program.

“This group I’d like to say everything was easy with this team, but we had our ups and downs this season, but we just talked about how we can’t replicate last season being undefeated. I mean, it’s such a big target on our backs. But the girls came in, we took a couple lumps early in the season and we had to adjust to being on the losing side every once in a while to start the season. And that took a little bit of reflection on our part. But after that we talked. They started to have more faith in each other as we had more faith in each other of doing our jobs on the field. We had a pretty strong streak there the last six weeks of the season.”

Senior Kameron Smith played her last game in a Mustang uniform, and praised her teammates for the last two years of winning.

I’m really proud of my team and I mean what everyone has done, they’re just great.”

The state championship was the second in school history for the Dallas Center-Grimes girls soccer program.
