June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Month and a free program is being offered for Greene County and surrounding veterans and their families.
The Jefferson American Legion Post #11 is hosting a discussion about PTSD on Tuesday at 7pm at the Greene County Community Center Conference Room. Vice Commander Elvin Thompson says his family has dealt with the effects of PTSD since the Civil War and it continues to impact them today.
Thompson points out veterans themselves may not recognize that they have it. Some of the signs include depression, anger, easily startled, along with substance abuse, and PTSD can cause marital and family issues.
Thompson invites all area veterans and their families to the free meeting, where he hopes to begin the healing process. He also invites those individuals who are spouses or loved ones of veterans that have passed away to gain a better understanding of what PTSD is.
