There’s a new eye-catching mural in Jefferson on one of the newest structures the city owns.

The Greene County High School painting class completed the mural on the east side of the new Greene County Animal Shelter in the Greene County Development Corporation West Business Park along Highway 4. Art teacher Sarah Stott tells Raccoon Valley Radio the students chose the final design that depicts a dog and cat waving with an intended message of “Take me home!” She says they also wanted to incorporate animal paws as a nod to the non-profit organization of the People for Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) of Greene County.

Stott notes that the students used semi-gloss exterior house paint with the metal outside of the building, and they had to use a scaffolding, with this mural being one of the tallest her classes have done in the community. Stott adds, another challenge her students had to overcome is painting between the panels of the wall with the corrugated metal siding. 

Jefferson City Administrator Mike Palmer thinks the mural makes the new facility obvious from what it is from the highway.

“The good thing is you can really see it and signage has always kind of been a question what we’re going to do for signage there. So, there still needs to be an animal shelter sign, but it’s pretty clear now with that beautiful mural on there what that buildings being used for.”
