The Jefferson American Legion Post #11 gave its annual scholarship to a recent high school graduate.
The Floyd W. Brown Scholarship was awarded to Bella Schroeder, who graduated with this year’s 2023 senior class at Greene County High School. The scholarship was first established in 2018 in honor of Brown, who was a Greene County native and is believed to be the first local casualty of World War I. The main criteria to apply for the scholarship is the applicant must be a child of an honorably discharged veteran. Bella’s dad, Aaron, served in the US Army.
This year’s scholarship was made possible by the John Peters family. John served in the US Army as a certified registered nurse during the Vietnam War, when he spent 36 consecutive hours in the operating room in the Tet Offensive. John was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and passed away in 2022
