A reminder that there will be several Memorial Day services happening in Greene County.
Tomorrow there will be a program at the Pleasant Hill Church at 4pm. Along with performances by the Greene County Singers and the Town and Country Band, the Rippey American Legion will conduct a salute to the fallen heroes. Ice cream sundaes and bars will be served.
Then on Memorial Day, one of the first services will be at the St. Patrick Historical Church in Churdan at 8am with a mass service. At 9:30am there will be a military service at the Highland Cemetery with a performance by the Town and Country Band. Free coffee and rolls are available at the American Legion Hall in Churdan from 8am-noon, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
The Fairview United Methodist Church in Rippey is having a 9am service, including Scout Troop 127 presenting the colors, followed by a program with music and remarks by Pastor Cat Stokes. The program concludes with a gun salute in the cemetery by the Rippey American Legion Hall and refreshments will follow.
The St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson will have its program at 9:30am with the blessing of the graves, followed by military honors from the Jefferson Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #9599 and the Jefferson American Legion Post #11. The program concludes with the playing of Taps by Lincoln Schwander and Keaton Hinote.
The Jefferson Municipal Cemetery program will take place at 10:45am. American Legion Post #11 Vice Commander Jim Andrew will be the master of ceremonies with opening remarks, followed by the invocation with Church of Christ Pastor Bruce Webster. The Jefferson Fire Department will raise the flags and the National Anthem, as well as a military melody will be played by the Greene County High School Band.
The winner of the American Legion Flag Essay Contest, fifth grader Annabelle Sanders, will recite her essay and Army Veteran Matt Thompson will deliver the Memorial Day Address. A firing squad of the Jefferson VFW and American Legion will honor the fallen heroes, followed by the playing of Taps from Karlee Fagerlind and Caleb Most.
Finally, another program will be at the Franklin Township Cemetery at 11am in Cooper. During the program, there is going to be a recognition of the closing of the Cooper United Methodist Church with the Stofer family.
