On Memorial Day there will be a program held at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery and there is one aspect that an organization is asking for the public’s help.
Bill Beger with the Jefferson Elks Lodge #2306 is looking for volunteers to assist with putting up 564 US Flags ahead of the Memorial Day program. Volunteers are to meet at the cemetery at 8am on Saturday to put up the 16 tubs full of flags. Berger talks about one important part of the installment of the flags.
“We have what’s called an ‘honor circle’ out there. One of the tubs has a gold band around it. These are the newest flags for our veterans that have passed away and they are put in an honor circle up by the front entrance. It’s about 20 to 22 of them in there. So we keep track and every time a new one is added, it’s added to the front of the line and then the last ones bumped off and put back out into the general area.”
Berger expects to be done by 10am and volunteers will also be needed at 4pm on Monday to take the flags down.
