Greene County 4-H’ers have a couple of opportunities to get a jump start on some exhibits for this year’s county fair.

Greene County ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway says there are a few spots left for a cake decorating class that will be held on Wednesday, May 31st from 4-5:30pm at Clover Hall on the Greene County Fairgrounds. The class will be taught by Hummingbird Confections and participants will learn the basics of cake decorating and then can choose to enter this category for the county fair. The cost for the class is $10 per person and it is for 3rd through 12th graders. The registration deadline is tomorrow.

Another 4-H County Fair Workshop is a poster project class for 4th through 12th graders on June 1st from 10-11:30am at the Greene County Extension Office in Jefferson. Hardaway talks about why she is doing more of these kinds of workshops ahead of the county and state fairs.

“We look at numbers that are low and where we feel that we could get more projects easily for youth, and we offer more workshops there. So communications is something I’m really trying to encourage youth to participate in. It’s something very important and a life skill, and this is just a great way to get your feet wet, but also just increase numbers in the project workshop.”

The poster project workshop is free, but registration is still required. Contact the Extension Office at 515-386-2138 or stop by to sign up.
