Greene County will host Chariton tonight at Linduska Field in Jefferson in the Substate 7 boys’ soccer final in Class 2A. The winner advances to the State Tournament in Des Moines next week.
Coach Carl Behne’s Rams are the top seed in Substate 7 and Chariton is the two seed. The Rams are 12-4 and won their semifinal on Monday vs. Ballard (Huxley), 7-2. The Chargers are 12-2 and they won 4-0 vs. Clarke (Osceola) on Monday to reach the final.
Greene County is the higher scoring team with 85 goals on the season, 39 of those by junior Gesser Gutierres, the leading goal scorer in Class 2A. Chariton is stingy on defense with just eight goals allowed all season and the Chargers have shut opponents out seven times.
Tonight’s Substate final will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com with coverage at 6:40 p.m. and kickoff at 7 o’clock. This is the first time the Rams have hosted a Substate final and they are seeking their third State Tournament berth in the five seasons playing as their own program.
