With planting season wrapping up, farm machinery will continue to be on the roadways.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams reminds motorists to be alert when encountering the slow moving farm implements on the roads and when passing them, make sure it is safe to do so and is done in the passing zones only. He advises to use caution when farm equipment is coming up to an intersection or a field drive.

“Most of them have lights and turn signals, most of them use them, but sometimes they’re covered with so much dust, as dry as it is, that you may not be able to see it. So if they’re coming up to a road, intersection, or a field drive, try not to pass them there.”

Williams notes that farm machinery is quite larger now and the implements take up more of the roadway.

“And same goes on overpasses, especially the Highway 30 overpass by (Grand) Junction and Scranton (on Highway 25). Both of them are narrow enough that most of the implements now take up a lane and a half to get through those. So just keep your eye out and make sure you’re going slow enough that you can stop if you need to.”

Williams adds to be patient and stay safe for the rest of the planting season.
