The Jefferson Streets/Sewer/Water/Sanitation committees met Tuesday in regular session.

The Sewer Committee discussed a sewer adjustment request. A resident submitted a letter requesting a $330 sewer charge be forgiven or at least a portion of it. The homeowners were living in another residence during the winter and a family member checked on the property. It was mentioned that the city’s policy doesn’t allow for adjustments to sewer charges under $500. However the policy was last changed in the early 2000s. The committee decided to table its decision until the policy was addressed and the amounts changed with today’s inflation.

The Sewer Committee then approved and will recommend to the City Council two cost estimates from Hawkeye Flat Roof Solutions in Toledo to replace a roof on the city’s maintenance shed for $37,985 and an outbuilding near the Wastewater Treatment Plant for $17,913.

The Streets Committee discussed alley improvements for two areas in town including Elm and Washington Streets, as well as Chestnut and Adams Streets. It was mentioned that the alley behind the new Murphy Farm Meats will be taken care of by city crews. The other alley near Shadran Industrial Supplies will be further reviewed and a solution will be presented at a future meeting.

The Streets Committee also decided to seek bids on seal coating the 100 block of East Mahlon Street and they will recommend to the City Council to approve a temporary road closure for a private concert at Rush Ridge Road on July 1st from 6-10pm. Additionally, the committee tabled its review of fee schedules for city services to August, and they will further discuss possible road closures at next month’s meeting for the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). A proposal was submitted by Jefferson Matters Executive Director Matt Wetrich to close all intersections along Lincoln Way from 8am-2pm on July 25th when RAGBRAI comes through.
