It’s been a really good week so far for Greene County High School senior Jesse Miller. He was named Male Ram of the Year on Tuesday, then he placed eighth in the Class 2A boys’ shot put Thursday at the Coed State Track & Field Championship at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Miller isn’t done either as he throws the discus today at 4:30 p.m.

Miller entered the shot competition in 16th place and threw in the first of two flights. His first toss went a career best 50 feet even, good enough to win the flight. The 12 throwers with the best distances at State qualifying meets were up next. Miller could make the eighth person final if only seven of those 12 passed him, and that’s what happened. That 50 foot toss, his first of the day, was his best of the day, and good enough for one team point and a State medal.

Head coach Chad Morton told Raccoon Valley Radio, “I’m so happy for Jesse and Coach (Andy) Carman! He deserves everything he gets for how hard he works at sports. He’s one of the most versatile athletes I’ve ever coached.” Miller is also one of the top students in his class, and his State meet continues this afternoon.

Also this afternoon, the Rams will run in the 2A distance medley relay, their only event on the track this year.
