Now that there’s been some rainfall, Jefferson residents are reminded of an ordinance.
City Administrator Mike Palmer says the city’s ordinance will not allow for a property to have over eight inches of grass. He points out that if the city’s code enforcer sees a property in violation of the ordinance, the owner will receive a notice about the violation telling them to mow the grass.
“The key is they only get one notice per year for this and after that if it starts growing over eight inches, then the city can come in there and mow it, and actually lien the property for those charges.”
Palmer adds the ordinance also prohibits someone from blowing or depositing grass clippings in the curb or street. He says the clippings get into the storm drainage system and can plug those areas up, forcing streets to become flooded.
