The Dallas County Hospital and Family Medicine Clinics celebrated National Nurses Week with their presentation of the DAISY Award on Friday.
The award is given to a nurse that exemplifies extraordinary care. There were seven nurses that were nominated by patients, patients’ families and community members. This year’s recipient went to Damar Carrillo. Her nominator said that she stood out for being able to connect and communicate with Hispanic families after a tragedy along with going above and beyond for her patients. Carrillo told Raccoon Valley Radio how special this award was to her.
“I’m just very honored. I love being a nurse. I’ve known that I wanted to be a nurse for a long time. Being a nurse helped me take care of my mom before she passed away from cancer. And I see her in every single one of my patients. So I love what I do.”
Since 1999 there have been 5,400 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 35 countries all around the world committed to honoring nurses with the DAISY Award.
