In support of Bike Safety Month, the Adel Rotary Club partnered with Adel Police Department to encourage the youth to practice good habits in a controlled environment.
The fourth annual Adel’s Bike Safety Rodeo took place at the city hall parking lot on Saturday. The police department was met with children on bicycles and they took the chance to inspect their bikes and then show them proper bike safety measures such as stopping at stop signs and looking for oncoming vehicles before crossing a road. Children who completed their safety obstacle course got a certificate for completion and a ice pop. Officer Monte Keller told Raccoon Valley Radio that its valuable to have these interactions with the youth.
“It’s important that, you know, young people are making sure they’re following the rules, rules of the road and being safe and, you know, making sure they’re stopping at stop signs. And, obviously, it’s not allowed to wear a helmet, but we’re just kind of helping to remind them about that as well. Just making sure they know how to stop their bikes. And that’s important.”
Additionally, those in attendance toured the Adel police vehicle and fire truck that were at the event.
