
Greene County had its two varsity soccer teams in separate tournaments on Saturday. The girls were in Creston with the boys at Nevada.
Coach Maribel Hernandez watched her girls win for the first time this season when they downed the host Panthers 1-0 on a shootout in the opening round of the tournament. After two scoreless halves, the team went to a five person shootout with the Rams using Chanlyn Cunningham, Esther Van Horn, Gracie Cooklin, Emma Shipley, and Katrina Heupel as their kickers. Cunningham, Shipley, Cooklin, and Heupel all scored and the Rams got into the victory column. Panorama defeated Boone in the opening round and the Class 1A number 12 Panthers topped the Rams 10-0. Greene County is now 1-9 on the season.
The boys were in a loaded field of teams at Nevada. After taking an early 1-0 lead on Class 3A number one ranked Des Moines Hoover, the Rams lost 3-1 in the opening round. Coach Carl Behne reports the goal came from Jack Hansen with the assist from Gesser Gutierres. Gabe Ebersole had 11 saves in goal for the Rams. “We played well. A couple of unlucky bounces and just tough play.” The Rams were 5-2 winners over Class 4A Marshalltown in the second match after it was tied 2-2 at the half. Gutierres had three goals and Hansen one. Cody McCollom recorded an assist and Ebersole recorded 16 saves. The day ended with a 3-1 loss to 2A number 10 Perry, which was the halftime score. Kolby Angell had the goal for the Rams and Ebersole had 18 saves. The Rams went into the day ranked number 7 in 2A and the coach said, “We had lots of minutes against great talent all day and I’m so proud of the boys’ effort. We have a lot of good things to take into the final week of the regular season.” Greene County enters this week with 10 wins on the season and just three losses.
