A new sport is coming next school year to the Greene County School District.
Earlier this spring the Greene County School Board approved bowling as another extracurricular activity for students. Activities Director David Wright is excited to engage even more students with another sport, even after the support he’s seen from a survey with students.
“We had around 20 boys that were interested, said they would go out for bowling, we had 12 or 13 girls, and then a bunch of ‘maybes.’ So I was pretty comfortable in proposing and recommending that we add bowling because I think we’re not going to have a problem getting young people to be a part of the program.”
Superintendent Brett Abbotts says the owners of Spare Time Lanes with John and Vickie Woodford would be supportive in making the new sport affordable for any student that wanted to join. He talks about having that private/public relationship with a business is key in making something like bowling easier to do.
“It just goes to speak just the level of support that John and Vickie (Woodford) are willing to give to the schools. One of the comments that John made to me that really made me feel really good about this was, he goes, ‘We are always behind the schools and we will always support the schools.’ That’s that community partnership and that community relationship that all of our schools need.”
Some of the additional costs would be for coaches, polo shirts or uniforms, tournament fees, and bowling alley rental. The new sport will start next winter sports season during the 2023-24 school year.
