The two Greene County High School seniors who won Iowa State Championships in February wrestled at the recent USA Open U20 National Tournament in Las Vegas and did well. Kale Petersen finished in second place and McKinley Robbins finished in the top 16.

Petersen wrestled at 61 kilograms (134 lbs.) and received a first round bye, then won five straight matches by technical fall before losing 10-8 in the championship match to a Pennsylvania wrestler. The high finish and All-American honor qualifies him for the U20 World Team Trials early in June in Ohio. Petersen is an Iowa Hawkeye recruit.

Robbins was one win away from top eight All-American honors. He is an Oregon State recruit and among his victories in Las Vegas was a win against an Oregon State wrestler, as well vs. other highly ranked individuals.

Unlike the State Tournament where there are 16 or 24 wrestlers in a bracket, the USA Open brackets are large enough to accommodate 128 wrestlers.

Petersen and Robbins both wrestle for Sebolt Wrestling Academy in Jefferson.
