The Greene County Historical Society monthly program will highlight individuals who were in the area before Greene County was settled.
Rippey resident Mary Weaver, along with Dan and Bessie Sayre, will deliver a free program about the indigenous people this Friday at the Churdan Library. Weaver has been interested in American Indian culture since she was a kid and will highlight members of the nomadic Sauk and Mesquaki tribes that lived along the county’s many streams and were mainly located in Kendrick and Cedar townships, north of Scranton.
There will also be artifacts that will be shared from the collection of the late Payson and Berniece Hillman of Grand Junction.
Dan Sayre is a county conservation employee and Bessie was the former director of the historical society’s first museum on the northside of the downtown square. Lunch will also be provided for $10 per person and served at noon, with the program to follow. Contact the historical society at 515-386-4408 to reserve a meal.
