There’s one bill that’s waiting to be signed into law and has gone back and forth between the Iowa Senate and the House of Representatives, before making it to the governor’s desk.

Senator for District 12 Amy Sinclair says the bill is about non-economic damages paid to victims of accidents where a trucker or trucking firm is involved. Sinclair tells Raccoon Valley Radio about those details.

“So it’s the non-economic damages. It’s not your medical bills, it’s not your car, it’s not actual damages that you can quantify monetarily and objectively. All of those things are excluded from this (bill) and are paid in full. What this caps is that unquantifiable, the pain and suffering as you describe it. So it caps it at $5 million per victim.”

Sinclair advises that legislators wanted to put the cap in place because there have been recent cases where not only trucking companies, but also health care providers, where settlements have been up to and around $90 million.
