A controversial bill has made its way through the Iowa House of Representatives.

District 23 Representative Ray Sorensen says the bill allows teachers, students and parents to have firearms in their vehicles in school parking lots. He advises that those firearms must be kept out of sight, and that the vehicle must be locked though. Sorensen expresses his thoughts on another part of the bill, which is gun safety.

“Yeah, I like the idea of that. Anytime we can talk about gun education, there are a lot of kids that they may have never been around a firearm. Maybe their parents have never hunted, and they’ve never taken the hunter safety course, and they have no idea what to do when they come upon a gun. I know a lot of kids have played Call of Duty and Fortnite and things like that, and that is not the proper training for a firearm. And so I think it’s a great idea to get these classes and offer them in schools and make sure our kids are having the ability to know what the safety (is) around coming upon a firearm. ‘What do I do? Who do I notify? What are the dangers?’ All those things.”

Sorensen tells Raccoon Valley Radio that gun safety education courses would become required for seventh through twelfth grade students, should the bill pass.
