Early next week there will be two services happening for Jefferson residents.

From April 24th-26th, the Jefferson Water Department will be conducting its spring water main flushings. During the three day stretch different portions of town will have their water mains flushed. Residents may experience discoloration for a few hours after the mains have flushed, and residents should wait until the water clears up before consuming or using the tap water to cook with. The Water Department says the brown color is from the iron that has settled on the bottom of the water lines.

City Administrator Mike Palmer says this is a needed maintenance service that is done twice per year.

“The City’s been doing this for quite a few years. It keeps the lines cleaned up and they last much longer because they don’t get all of that sediment build up in them.”

Another service from the Public Works Department is the beginning of brush pick up weeks that happen the final full week of every month. Palmer says city crews will pick up any yard waste that is in the 30-gallon biodegradable bags on a resident’s normal garbage day. Yard waste must have a sticker that can be purchased at City Hall for $1. He points out another service that is accessible for residents near Daubendiek Park.

“The yard waste site is open. You don’t want to wait for the pick up on curbside or would prefer to take the bags down yourself. You can certainly do that. I always want to emphasize though that if you come down there, no plastic bags. You can dump your stuff out of your plastic bags and take them home (and) no processed lumber. You can always bring concrete pieces down there.”
