A Dayton man was recently sentenced to probation following a high speed chase in Greene County.
According to court documents, 28-year-old Austin Ferguson pled guilty to an amended charge of a Class D Felony for eluding, along with an aggravated misdemeanor for driving while barred – habitual offender, and a serious misdemeanor for his first offense for possession of methamphetamine. He was sentenced to three years of probation with the Iowa Department of Corrections.
The charges stemmed from an incident on February 11th. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office located Ferguson, who was living in Jefferson at the time, and had an arrest warrant in Hamilton County. Ferguson was filling up his vehicle with gas at the Casey’s General Store in Jefferson after 5am, when a deputy and a Jefferson Police Officer activated their emergency lights. Ferguson then took off and a chase ensued, reaching speeds of 95-miles-per-hour, and the chase ended on R Avenue near 190th Street. He was also found in possession of methamphetamine.
Court documents show that Ferguson was also ordered to pay over $2,000 in fines, surcharges, court costs and court-appointed attorney fees. As per the plea agreement, the citation for reckless driving was dismissed.
