The turkey hunting season has opened up in Iowa.
There are four seasons associated with turkey hunting that includes season one that runs from April 10th through April 13th and the last season will go from April 26th through May 14th. Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer for Dallas County Dustin Eighmy tells Raccoon Valley Radio that each hunter will get two turkey tags and they cannot be used in the same season unless a resident purchases an archery-only tag.
“You can’t hunt two turkeys during season one or two or three. So your first tag is going to be either season one, season two or season three. And then your second tag will have to be season four. And that’s a gun bow tag so you can use a gun or archery equipment.”
Eighmy promotes hunters to use the northeast portion of Dallas County near the Des Moines River because of the public land and population of turkeys.
“Up through there. I see (turkeys). I hear (turkeys). There is probably a little bit more pressure there just being next to the metro and everything else. But put your time in scout ahead of time. You know, turkeys can be kind of predictable.”
He also notes that shooting times will be half-hour before sunrise to sunset with a daily bag limit of just one bearded or male wild turkey for each license. For more information about the season dates click the link here.
