Several bills have been adopted by Iowa lawmakers in recent weeks, although some have been discussed more than others.
Iowa Senator for District 12 Amy Sinclair tells Raccoon Valley Radio about one such bill, and how her thoughts on it were different before it came time to pass it.
“So I’ll be honest, Senate File 547, which is hands free driving, is probably one of the few issues that I came into the Senate with one opinion, and changed it to another once the data was presented to me. I might have a libertarian streak, which leads me to believe that if I’m not bothering you and you’re not bothering me, there shouldn’t be a law to interfere with that. And I felt like hands free driving probably fell into that. What I’m doing in my car while I’m not bothering you isn’t really your business.”
Sinclair says while there were some laws pertaining to distracted driving before hand, texting was the only thing they really covered, which left loopholes of how to get out of trouble if one was pulled over for having their phone in their hand. Before someone could say they were making a call, or using their GPS (Global Positioning System). Now phones or other smart devices can only be used if they are in a hands free mode/setting.
