(L-R): Makayla Betts, Hailey Carman and Grace Curtis
The Greene County School Board recently approved a new high school student group.
The Book Club was approved this past February and the sponsor is Kirsten Carman. Senior Grace Curtis says the purpose for the Book Club is to promote reading and discuss books with friends. Junior Makayla Betts is also one of the members and she believes there’s a growing trend of teens reading books again.
“I feel like reading books has become more popular since it blew up on TikTok. Everyone is starting to get into books again, including people in our school, and I think having a Book Club promotes it.”
Sophomore Hailey Carman explains why she wanted to be part of the Book Club.
“I also really enjoy reading books and I like having other people to discuss them, and I also think it’ll just be a good time to get with my friends and get new recommendations from them also of what I can read.”
Superintendent Brett Abbotts shares his thoughts on the Book Club.
“That is something that I would absolutely support for our kids. It’s different, it’s unique, it’s exciting, I love that kids get involved with literacy. They’re looking to kind of stretch themselves.”
Curtis says currently each student is reading their own books and sharing their thoughts as a group, with the overall goal of all members reading the same book and then discussing it on a monthly basis. She adds students can join anytime by letting one of the members or the sponsor know.
