A bill that is waiting for Governor Kim Reynolds to be signed into law would restructure how state government operates.
District 47 Representative Carter Nordman (R-Panora) says the nearly 1,600-page bill would streamline state departments and narrow them down from 37 to 16, while also saving Iowans approximately $200 million over the next four years. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio even though it may seem like the large bill didn’t take very long to be approved by the House, lots of work went into preparing for the vote.
“The (House) State Government Committee was meeting with department heads and stakeholders throughout all of session. So there’s been a lot of conversation about this bill. There was good debate on the House floor as well.”
Nordman appreciates the smoothness this bill had going through the House.
“I think the State Government Committee and Chairwoman (Jane) Bloomingdale did a phenomenal job at really getting to know this bill, explaining it to the caucus and bringing it forward for the vote that we did.”
Nordman equates state government, with its $9 billion budget, to that of a $9 billion private company that the company wouldn’t wait four decades before realigning how it operates, and neither should state government.
