This is Spring Break week in the Greene County School District, but the girls and boys track & field squads have their final indoor meet this Saturday in Storm Lake at Buena Vista University.

Coach Derek Merk has 33 girls out for the sport with a handful doing either golf or soccer at the same time they are taking part in track & field. There are 11 seniors on the squad, an unusually high number compared to recent seasons. All of the returning State qualifiers are seniors and there are 11 girls on the team in their final year of high school. While only five juniors are out, there are eight sophomores and nine freshmen.

The head coach expects contributions from athletes in all grade levels and he’s optimistic about the ability to cover all, or nearly all, 19 events. The outdoor season is scheduled to begin in less than two weeks, on Monday, March 27. That’s the date of the Greene County Early Bird Coed Meet at Linduska Field in Jefferson. Those wishing to volunteer in some capacity at home meets are asked to reach out to the Activities Department at the high school.
