A deadline happens tomorrow for area farmers to be aware of.
Greene County ISU Extension Farm Management Specialist Alexis Stevens says farmers and crop producers must decide if they want Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) for their crop insurance this year at a local Farm Services Agency office.
“This is an annual choice that we need to be making right now. We need to go in there (FSA office) and let them know, ‘Am I going to do ARC? Am I going to do PLC?’ There’s really not a whole lot of that’s changed in the ag world, so whatever you chose last year is probably going to work out the same for you (this year.”
Stevens points out how lucky the market has been lately and crop production the last couple of years.
“At some point that line isn’t going to keep climbing up, up, up and the same thing with the price, at some point it’s going to start going down. So we need those strong risk management tools. And when we look at what we expect for profits in farming coming in the next year, it’s not going to be as good as the last year. So it’s really important that we have that risk management tool there of crop insurance.”
