A Jefferson man was recently sentenced for an incident last May.

According to court documents, 25-year-old Zachery Waters-Rice pled guilty to three Class D Felonies for possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and third degree burglary, along with an aggravated misdemeanor for eluding. Waters-Rice was sentenced to no more than five years in prison for each of the felony charges, to be served consecutively, and to run concurrently with the two years in prison for the aggravated misdemeanor.

The charges stemmed from an incident on May 16, 2022. Police Chief Mark Clouse said Waters-Rice had left a work release program in Fort Dodge, as he was serving a probation sentence from an unrelated conviction from earlier in the year. Court documents show officers received a couple of phone calls about hearing gunshots and witnesses say Waters-Rice pulled a shotgun from a duffle bag before shooting at a passing vehicle. Waters-Rice also stole a vehicle with three firearms in it. He was also eluding officers before eventually being arrested.

Waters-Rice was ordered to pay victim restitution and as per a plea agreement, the other charges including felonies for attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a domestic offender, going armed with intent, along with misdemeanors for use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime, operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent, assault with a dangerous weapon, and first offense for possession of marijuana were dismissed.
