Carter Morton of Jefferson, a third year track & field athlete at the University of Northern Iowa, won the long jump, triple jump, and the heptathlon, and was fifth in the high jump at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships in Chicago at Gately Park on Sunday and Monday. He was the high point scorer for the meet and named Most Valuable Athlete for his efforts.
The son of Chad and Deb Morton of Jefferson and a 2020 Greene County High School graduate, Morton went 24′ 1-3/4″ to win the long jump, an event he entered at third in the conference, but he topped his previous best by more than five inches. He competed in the triple jump for only the second time in his career and placed first at 48′ 2-3/4″. The high jump was his tenth event of the two day meet and he cleared the bar at 6′ 7-1/2″.
Morton totaled 5,278 points to win the heptathlon by 420 points and he won three heptathlon events, the long jump, high jump, and pole vault. He went 23′ 8″, 6′ 10-3/4″, and 14′ 9″, respectively, in thoee three heptathlon events. Morton was second in the shot put and 60 meter hurdles, third in the 60 meter dash, and eighth in the 1,000 meter run to round out the seven events of the heptathlon.
The former Greene County Ram was instrumental in UNI’s third place finish among nine MVC men’s teams. Indiana State edged Illinois State for the team title.
