International Women’s Day will make a comeback in Perry after a pause.

The International Women’s Day will return from 10am until noon on Saturday at the La Poste in Perry, after the pandemic canceled the event the last two years. Organizer Carol Cavanaugh says that International Women’s Day is a global holiday to celebrate social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Cavanaugh tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she learned about the celebration working in an orphanage in Kazakhstan

“What I did at the orphanage was work with older children, practice speaking their English because they had teachers in their schools that taught English, but they didn’t speak English. So I was working with these children and they’re the ones. ‘Oh, Miss Carol. Miss Carol, Happy Women’s Day. Happy Women’s Day.’ I noticed all the women in the orphanage were very happy that day. They’re hardworking. It’s a hard life. I saw what they went through in our travels. I’ve seen it’s hard for women in a lot of countries. And so, you know, heck, one day to celebrate, I think is good.”

The International Women’s Day event will have a number of different speakers which include speakers from Ukraine and Georgia along with the performance from the Perry High School Girls Choir. Cavanaugh talks about who she would like to attend this event.

“Well all women, it doesn’t matter, all ages. I really wish all young people would get involved more and I think that is going to be the case this year with the exchange students and with the students coming from the high school.”

Cavanaugh encourages attendees to come early to get a seat because the doors will open at 9:15am. There will be tea, coffee and pastries served at the door and door prizes will be given away. This event is free but a free will donation will be accepted.
