The high school boys’ basketball season for Greene County has been over for more than a week, but head coach Chris Nelson may be one of the most sought after coaches, by coaches with teams in next week’s State Tournament in Des Moines. That because Nelson’s Rams played three teams that qualified for State, and another that plays tonight with a State Tournament trip on the line.

That list includes Heart of Iowa Activities Conference Champion Roland-Story (Story City) and Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) from the Hawkeye 10 Conference. Those Class 2A teams each went 2-0 this season vs. Greene County and they play each other in the quarterfinals next week. The other is the top seed in 1A, undefeated Grand View Christian (Des Moines). Class 3A Webster City meets Bishop Heelan of Sioux City tonight in a Substate final to determine who goes to State, so it’s possible the Rams will have played six games against four State Tournament teams. That may partially explain the 10-13 season record for Greene County.
