A Carroll man was arrested for two similar incidents at a casino in Jefferson.
According to court documents, 47-year-old Nathan Martin was playing slot machines on two separate occasions where he won jackpots. The first incident took place on February 2nd and he won $2,007, the second incident was on February 7th and he won $2,160. In both cases, Martin had another individual sit at the machines and claimed the winnings, and both individuals filled out IRS W-9 forms to certify the winnings under penalty of perjury.
The assigned Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) agent for the casino reviewed the surveillance footage and determined Martin had won both jackpots. Martin’s information was run through the Iowa Department of Administrative Services Offset Program and he owed the state of Iowa $89,000. The two jackpots were withheld from Martin and applied toward his debt.
Martin was charged with three Class D Felonies, including two gambling-avoid setoff and one second degree fraudulent practice. Another suspect from the February 7th incident, 40-year-old McKensie Bess of Carroll was also charged with Class D Felonies for gambling-avoid setoff and second degree fraudulent practice. Both Martin and Bess were arrested this past weekend and were booked into the Greene County Jail.
