The Guthrie County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Office is partnering with the Mary J Barnett Memorial Library for a fun event.

With no school coming up on Monday, the two organizations will work together to put on an educational event about outer space. Extension Kindergarten through 12th Grade Outreach Coordinator Megan McBride, who organized the Outer Space Learning Day, says the event came about because she wanted to do a Science Technology Engineering and Math related activity, and that when she thinks of STEM, outer space is one of the first things that comes to mind.

McBride tells Raccoon Valley Radio that starting at 1pm, she’ll read a book about astronauts and outer space. Following that she has a series of crafts and games to play. She says that the kids will make rockets out of paper, and then make them fly with a straw and learn a little about angles, then they’ll learn about the different traits stars have, and make their own star while using some of those traits.

McBride mentions that she’ll have the children then play a game similar to HeadBandz, with different planetary bodies as what they’ll have to figure out She adds that they’ll then learn about the constellations, and then make some out of pipe cleaners and beads using a map as a reference.
