Expansion of the Iowa High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament means a shorter than usual period of time between District and State tournaments. Greene County will send seniors Kale Petersen and McKinley Robbins, junior Gavin Scheuermann, and sophomore Brent Dennhardt, to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines for Wednesday afternoon’s first round. The State tournament is four days long for the first time with 24 qualifiers in each weight class instead of 16, which has been the case for decades.
The top eight seeded wrestlers receive first round byes, but will take to the mats later Wednesday afternoon after the lower 16 seeded wrestlers face off in the first round. Petersen and Robbins are both number one seeds at 132 and 138 lbs., respectively, while Sheuermann is seeded eleventh at 160 and Dennhardt has the number 12 seed at 145 lbs.
Class 1A programs start the first of four days at 9 a.m. on Wednesday from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. All three Raccoon Valley Radio stations will have play-by-play of area wrestlers in all three classes of competition all four days.
