The IGHSAU Girls Wrestling State Championships went off without a hitch on Thursday and Dallas Center-Grimes wrestlers found some success.
It started with (105) Ava Gannon in round one defeating Mercedes Ponce (Perry) in a decision but in round two she would be defeated by Layla Phillips (Mason City) in a fall. Gannon would bounce back in the consolation bracket beating Ella Horn (Ankeny) and Jerzey Shultz (Alburnett) by falls. Gannon will face off against Mckenna Rotgers (Solon) for a day two matchup in the consolation bracket.
Josephine Bond entered the state tournament in the 115 pound division and lost her first match to Elyse Engebretson (Ankeny) in a decision but rebounded from that loss by defeating Angelina Roling (Riverside) in a 5-2 decision. Bond’s state title hopes would come to a close with a loss Jasmine Oleson in a 5-2 decision.
Bella Mulder would put up a strong day one performance in the 135 pound division winning her first match against Mackenzie Bauchman in a fall. In round two, Mulder would fall to Maely Elsbury but carry some momentum in the consolation bracket with two wins over Angie Rivera (Denison-Schleswig) and Elizabeth Oleson (Charles City). Mulder will take on Lizzy Wolf (BECO) in the consolation bracket today.
Maya Fritz at 170, would lose in a sudden victory in round one to Karissa Oldenburger (Waverly-Shell Rock) but she would later battle in the consolation bracket winning three matches putting herself in a position to wrestle today against Louise Myer (Central Lyon).
Halley Beaudet was riding high into the state tournament as a region qualifying champion in the 190 pound division. Beaudet would drop her first round match to Kaylee De Jong (Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley) in a fall but make up for it with two consolation wins over Kaylee Nachtigal (Spencer) in a fall and Emmalee Sharar (Cedar Falls) by major decision before losing to Chloe Heefner (Cedar Rapids).
Asia Jahangir would lose both of her matches in the 130 pound division against Delanie Westcott and Mara Smith both by falls. Mackenzie Sizemore would also fall in both of her matches in the 155 pound division by a fall to Trinity Rotgers (AGWSR) and by decision to Jalyiah Gardner (KeoKuk).
