Single digit and below zero temperatures are back in the forecast this week and so it’s a good time to remind pet owners of how to keep your furry friends safe.
Veterinarian Dr. Christy Fields with Companion Veterinary Clinic of Greene County advises dog owners to not have their indoor canines out very long when it’s below freezing temperatures.
“10-15 minutes to go out in those freezing weather days is enough to go potty and come back in. If you’re walking your pet during those really cold times, also bundle them up. Get some pet clothing that helps break the wind.”
Dr. Fields describes best practice for keeping outdoor dogs safe from the cold.
“Make sure that they are protected from the wind, especially, get them a dog house. If it has a door on it that’s even better (it) can help trap some heat. Make sure that you have some bedding in there, something that they can get borrowed into like straw or wood shavings are best. Make it deep, so there’s some protection and insulation from the ground.”
Dr. Fields adds that for outdoor dogs, make sure to use a water dish with a warmer to keep their drinking water from freezing.
