After three in a row on the road, the Greene County varsity basketball teams were at home in Jefferson on Friday night hosting West Marshall (State Center). The Trojans won the girls’ game 79-17 and WM was the boys’ winner by a 66-64 final. Both games were heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The WM girls are ranked fourth in Class 3A and are now 17-1 overall and 10-1 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. Greene County fell to 0-16, 0-11. Esther Van Horn had five points and Emma Hoyle four for Greene County. Bella Borgos scored 23 points for the Trojans, who went 10 of 23 on three-point shots and 34 of 62 overall. The Rams were three of 13 on three’s and six of 43 overall from the floor. Greene County had just 18 turnovers, well below their average, while WM turned the ball over just five times even though 16 players were used in the contest.
The Greene County and WM boys were back and forth and the closing seconds were hectic. WM was up 59-51, but the Rams stormed back and had the ball down 65-64 and had an inbounds play with 5.6 seconds left under their basket, missed a close shot, thinking a foul would be called, but no whistle was heard. WM made one of two free throws with 1.2 remaining to go up 66-64 and Greene County heaved the ball down the court with two Trojans and one Rams all ending up on the deck as time ran out with no whistle. Right after the game ended, two technical fouls were assessed to Ram senior Patrick Daughery, who was ejected and will miss Tuesday’s game at Perry. Richard Daugherty had 22 points and he sank five three-pointers in the close loss. Jesse Miller scored 14 points with 13 from Gabe Ebersole and 12 for Brynley Ruzicka on four three-point baskets. The Rams fell to 6-5 in the HOIAC and 7-9 overall while WM improved to 8-10 and 5-6. Greene County had a dozen three’s and WM had 10.
Next up for the Rams is a girl/boy doubleheader Tuesday, Jan. 31 in Perry on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
