With the Education Savings Account bill having passed, legislators are now looking to other educational topics.

Last week Governor Kim Reynolds proposed a 2.5 percent increase to State Supplemental Aid (SSA), but Iowa House District 23 Representative Ray Sorensen describes his thoughts about the proposed increase when considering the high rate of inflation.

“I would like to see much higher. You know, I would like to see at the very least three percent SSA. But again, I’m one of 150 legislators, so it’s not fully up to me.”

Sorensen mentions that it isn’t just the House that decides what they’d like to increase SSA by, but also the Senate discusses what they’d like to see, and make a decision from there. He adds that the 2.5 percent is more of a baseline to get started than a final say.
