The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Greene, Dallas counties from noon on Wednesday through 9am on Thursday.
Weatherology Meteorologist Cara Foster tells Raccoon Valley Radio the majority of today’s forecast will be a wintry mix with freezing rain, rain and snow with temperatures hovering around the freezing point at 33 degrees and easterly winds gusting as high as 25 miles per hour. She points out during the evening commute is when the storm will turn into all snowfall throughout the night and tomorrow morning.
“Unfortunately with this system since it has so much moisture in it, it’s going to be moderate to heavy snowfall throughout the majority of it. Dipping down to only 27 (degrees) so still on the warmer side of it which is still way we see so much accumulation with this system.”
Foster explains the reason why this system is bringing lots of moisture causing heavy snowfall to occur.
“This is actually the lingering stuff that we’re seeing from that atmospheric river that’s been coming into California and just hammering the West Coast. So they’ve been seeing over ten systems coming through the last few weeks. This is the final system that has made its way through. We’re just seeing the after effects of it. So that’s why there’s so much moisture with this one compared to the previous one.”
Foster adds that for Greene, Guthrie and Dallas counties, there will be between 4-9 accumulated inches of snowfall with this winter storm.
