Grandview Christian of Des Moines visited Greene County for a girl/boy high school basketball non-conference doubleheader on KG98 last night. The Thunder swept the two games by scores of 66-30 in the girls’ contest and 98-32 in the boys.
The Thunder are ranked number one in Class 1A by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. At 7′ 0″, 6′ 9″, 6′ 5″, and 6′ 4″, GVC is a difficult size matchup for teams. In addition to great size, the Thunder went 15 of 34 on three-point shots and the outcome was never in doubt. GVC led 66-17 at intermission, so the second half was played with the running clock. Josh Sanderson had 27 points and Frankie Chiodo 26 and the two combined for nine made three’s. The Rams had no one reach double figures in points and were led in scoring by Trey Schilling with nine points. The Thunder are 10-0 while the Rams fell to 4-7 and the 66 point margin was among the widest in some time.
The GVC girls led 38-15 at the half and they had the running clock in the closing minutes of the game as the led reached 35 points. Emma Shipley scored nine points for the Rams while Riley Lane sank seven three-pointers and finished with 23 points. Lane entered the game averaging 8.4 points per game. The Rams had 34 turnovers as they turned to 0-11 while GVC improved to 8-4.
Greene County is home tonight for the fourth time in 2023 in make up action with the Perry teams in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage is at 5:45 p.m. with the girls at 6 o’clock and the boys to follow.
