For hunters looking to harvest deer in Guthrie County, there are some good public areas to try and find that trophy buck.

Guthrie County Conservation Director Brad Halterman tells Raccoon Valley Radio that between state and county owned public areas, hunters looking for deer have a great selection to choose from. He adds that these areas have great habitat for deer, and that can cause some of them to grow to very healthy sizes. Halterman says that Guthrie County is lucky to have these areas.

“We’re very fortunate that not only do we have some public hunting ground, but we have some big chunks and some big complexes of public hunting ground also.”

Halterman mentions that Elk Grove, the Bennie Hall Wildlife area and Lenon Mills Wildlife area are all places that have great timber habitat for deer and other animals. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, both deer archery and late muzzleloader seasons wrap up today and then all deer hunting seasons are done until next year.
