The Greene County School Board is looking to do another large scale summer project.

At their most recent meeting in December, the Board approved to allow the Garland Company to bid two portions of the roof at the middle school. Superintendent Brett Abbotts says the roofs over the wrestling area and the gym are about 25 years old and need to be replaced. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio the Garland Company served as the Board’s consultant, because the rest of the middle school roof is through them, and once these two portions are replaced, those will be covered by the Garland Company and automatically receive a 30 year warranty on the entire structure.

Abbotts explains the options the Board had to decide on for this project and what the cost estimates were.

“So at a max end, if we were to do both sections independently, it would be about $215,000. However, their recommendation was to do both sections at the same time, which could save us about $50,000 right up front. Just in terms of not having to come back, the transportation costs, the delivery and all that, that it goes in with that. So hopefully we’d be more looking at $360,000-$380,000 range once we get that discount from them.”

The Board is expected to approve the project at their February meeting and that the work will be done this summer. Payment for the project is coming from sales tax.
