Guthrie County once again is enjoying having several antlerless deer tags for the various hunting seasons.
Guthrie County Conservation Director Brad Halterman says that Guthrie County is blessed with great public areas for hunting.
One side effect of that is that deer populations are high in Guthrie County, assuring hunters with opportunities to harvest an animal when deer seasons come around. Halterman tells Raccoon Valley Radio that with the high deer populations, the state allots antlerless tags to counties to try and help control herd sizes. He adds that this year, Guthrie County received more tags than the usual 2,000.
“Guthrie County was allotted 2,350 antlerless tags, and they’re all sold out. They’ve all sold out, there’s not any available.”
Halterman mentions that hunters have a variety of reasons for wanting to use an antlerless tag. They may want some extra meat for their freezer, to just go out and enjoy the hunt, or even to donate the meat to the Help Us Stop Hunger program.
