As a freshman last year, Gavyn Winters had a winning record as a Greene County varsity wrestler at 106 lbs. Back at the same weight this season, Winters is bigger and stronger, and he possesses a record of 18 wins and just three losses at the break for the holidays. He told Raccoon Valley Radio he had to gain weight to be at 106 last season and this year he weighed a little above that number when the season began. “I feel like I’m pushing my pace harder in practice, I’m working harder overall, and I have goals this season.” One of those goals is to qualify for the Class 2A portion of the State Tournament Feb. 15-18 in Des Moines.
Winters isn’t the only Ram wrestler with an outstanding record as seniors McKinley Robbins and Kale Petersen are 19-0 and 18-0, respectively. Sophomore Brent Dennhardt is 13-2 junior Gavin Scheuermann is 4-0 after getting a late start to the season.
The Rams were to have opened the 2023 portion of the season on Jan. 3 in Jefferson, but that has been cancelled. Activities Director Dave Wright informed Raccoon Valley Radio the Rams have picked up a triangular on Thursday, Jan. 5 in Ft. Dodge at St. Edmond vs. the Gaels and Iowa Falls-Alden. On Jan. 7, Greene County goes to the Atlantic Tournament.
