The Guthrie County Secondary Road crews were prepared for the storm before Christmas, but still faced a few issues.
Guthrie County Engineer Josh Sebern tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the department prepares for storms individually because of how unique each one can be. He adds that even though this last storm wasn’t as bad as many thought it would be, it still posed some interesting issues.
“Even though we didn’t get that much snow and it wasn’t quite as bad as maybe what the fears were, the snow continued to move for several days and that just gets to be a grind on man hours and equipment. It was a challenge. And then the cold was a major threat and concern. We did have some troubles with some of the newer machines, the fuel filters seemed to be giving us fits.”
Sebern mentions that there were places, especially on east and west running roads, where plows would clear the roads and the wind would blow snow back onto it right behind them. He also says that after a couple days, the wind switched directions and started blowing snow onto north and south running roads.
