The Jefferson Kiwanis Club is looking to sponsor some area youth for a reading program.
Jefferson Kiwanis President Mike Palmer tells Raccoon Valley Radio they are partnering with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, where children from newborn to five years old receive one book per month until the child’s fifth birthday. Palmer explains that one of their members approached the club about the program.
“When we were made aware of it, we hadn’t budgeted for this. The Board took it up and said, ‘Well, let’s sponsor 25 kids for a one year stint.’ Then we’ll see how that goes and we’ll just look at doing more kids and more years at a time. Just a good opportunity to get started.”
When they discussed it, Palmer says this program was a no-brainer. Palmer notes their initial one year involvement is $630, which is coming from their fundraisers they have throughout the year, including the pop can collection site at Ace Hardware.
“This fits right into our mission of (helping) children. How cool it is for a child to get a book once a month to look forward to that, that’s theirs to keep for good. For one year, I think it’ll be very interesting to see how that goes. If it does, we can sponsor a child up to five years for like $126.”
