Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright warns county residents of something that happens year round, but is especially prevalent at this time of the year.

With hunting seasons taking place in December, deer are on the move, and deer related accidents are on the rise. He has a piece of advice for drivers if they do see a deer on the road while driving.

“It’s ‘Don’t veer for a deer.’ And that’s very true. Because if you try to miss it, you could go off the road and then get into an accident or something far worse than just by hitting a deer.”

Arganbright adds that if you do hit a deer, there are some steps to take. First, if you need emergency services, call 911. If you don’t, then call the non-emergency number for the sheriff’s office. They will come to help you especially if the deer is still alive or needs to be pulled off the road. Arganbright says if at all possible, try and get the deer out of the road quickly, as long as it’s safe. Lastly, if you want to keep anything from the deer, then the conservation office also needs to be called, so that they can help get it registered and tagged properly. Both the non-emergency number for the sheriff’s office, and the number for the conservation office are listed below.
