The Greene County Sheriff is telling people to stay off the roads.
Sheriff Jack Williams says he and his deputies have been responding to stranded vehicles on the roads since 6:30am Friday. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio as of 11am, they have rescued people from five vehicles and three semi tractor-trailers, and towing services have had to be used to get all of those vehicles off of the traveled portion of the roads. He urges people to stay home as travel is not advised at this time. However, he adds if you do become stuck on the road to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 515-386-2136 but it may be several hours before a deputy can get to you.
Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss says his entire fleet of 26 plow trucks, maintainers and road snowblower have been out since 5am to keep county roads open. He points out crews will remain out until 5pm, will then work tomorrow all day and part of Christmas Day. He notes the biggest issue is the 50 mile per hour winds blowing snow to the point of zero visibility and snow drifts all across the county.
